Sunday morning music

A couple of weeks ago, we looked at songs about whisk(e)y.  How about rum this time?

Let's start with a couple of oldies.  Here's The Andrews Sisters with their famous hit song "Rum and Coca-Cola", from the album "20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: Best Of The Andrews Sisters".  I can remember my father singing this song as he shaved - it was one of his favorites during his wartime service, if I recall correctly.

Next, here's Hubert Porter and The Jamaican Calypsonians with "Rum and Coconut Water", from the album "Calypsos from Jamaica".

Let's dip into our maritime heritage with Robert Louis Stevenson's classic pirate shanty, "Fifteen Men On A Dead Man's Chest".  It's from his famous novel "Treasure Island".  This version is considered to be as close as possible to how it was originally set to music.

To add a folksy Irish note, here's "Rum Runners" from Gaelic Storm's album "Cabbage".

American comedian Rich Hall has made a name for himself as the fictional country musician "Otis Lee Crenshaw".  Here he is poking fun at one of Australia's iconic drinks with his "Bundaberg Rum Song".

Speaking of Bundaberg Rum, the company has made some marvelously entertaining advertisements, some of which we've enjoyed in these pages.  Let's close this rum rendition with their 2014 singing commercial.

(Lawdog and I are rather fond of their ginger beer, too!)

WHY did you have to mention Bundaberg Ginger Beer? That triggered a Pavlovian drool. It tastes great, lots of gingery goodness, and good medicine. Sometimes even better if mixed with more "medicine".

Now I need to go find a couple bottles, or order a case. My stash is finished.

The "Fifteen Men" version you highlight was performed by the Roger Wagner Chorale, in an album entitled 'Sea Chanties,' which also included 'Shenandoah,' 'High Barbaree,' 'The Golden Vanity,' and of course 'Sailing, Sailing.' I think the recording was made in the late '50's or early '60's.

Ah, Bundaberg Ginger beer! The holiday blend is not bad at all, once you get over the "my stars-and-garters, this tastes like potpourie smells" reaction. Lots of nutmeg and cinnamon in the brew.
